The Definition Of Independent Learning - 876 Words

This essay will focus on the definition of independent learning, constitution of independent learning skills, how independent learning skills can be developed whilst studying at university and last of all, in what ways independent learning supports and benefits students in Higher Education. The general meaning of independent learning is ‘students having an understanding of their learning; being motivated to take responsibility for their learning; and working with teachers to structure their learning environment’, (Meyer et al, 2008, p2, A). Successful independent learning depends on a number of external and internal factors. ‘External factors implicate the formation of a strong relationship between teachers and students and the establishment of an ‘enabling environment’’ (Meyer et al., 2008, p2, B), this denotes social interaction and support from teachers and peers assisting students with their learning and providing help. Students can learn better if teachers interact and produce creative learning activities. On the other hand; internal factors are the skills that individual students have to obtain in order to be an effective independent learner. The skills required for independent learning can be divided into three components, these include; cognitive skills, metacognitive skills and affective skills.
